Jesse’s Myles Garrett Trade Grade and Reaction

As we have seen yesterday from Ian Rappaport and other news sources, the LA Rams and the Cleveland Browns have agreed to a trade that involves Myles Garrett. Garrett of course just broke the record for most sacks in a season and is arguably the most dominant defensive player in the NFL. The Rams, who have had a productive offseason, are looking to make it to the Super Bowl especially since it will be played at SoFi stadium this year. The Rams have added a top 10 corner in Trent McDuffie and his KC Chief counterpart Jaylen Watson. Adding Garrett helps the Ram bolster an already impressive defensive unit, however, I do have concerns at the safety position although they resigned Kam Curl. The Browns on the other hand have a new coach, and are looking to be yet on another rebuild. Browns fans are probably tired of this, but with this in mind, the Browns are looking to get younger and better. So how about we look at the trade details.
The LA Rams Receive: Myles Garrett
Cleveland Browns Receive:
- Jared Verse
- 2027 1st Round Pick
- 2028 2nd Round Pick
- 2029 3rd Round pick
Grades
Rams: B+
Browns: B+
Rams Reaction: This is putting all the cards on the table, the Rams are here to win. They know Matthew Stafford is near the end of his career, and if he can have one more MVP caliber season, this team can make it to the Super Bowl. We talked about the additions of McDuffie and others to help the defense, what I think will slow this team down could be the offensive line. Nonetheless, the trade was huge, Myles Garrett just had 23 sacks on one of the worst NFL teams, imagine the damage he can do on a team that is well coached and has plenty of talent like Byron Young, Braden Fisk, Kobie Turner, Poona Ford, and others. Garrett is going into the situation that he wanted, which was “I want to win!” situation. Well Garrett got what he wanted. This team was already in contention, they have come up close against Seattle twice and won once last season. They were right there at the doorstep. I love HC Sean McVay, he is a great coach, this team will make it deep if Stafford can play elite still. I’m waiting to hear the Aaron Donald call next! Myles Garrett will be in contention for a long time with this team, and that is even if Ty Simpson doesn’t pan out, McVay is just that good of a coach. Now some of you may wonder why it is a B+ grade though if I think all these good things? Well, Rams were already in contention before this trade, Garrett is 30, so who knows how long he’ll be at peak performance as well, although it doesn’t seem soon. They gave up 3 picks with Jared Verse. These 3 picks could hurt in the future if Simpson doesn’t play as well as they expect. The Rams have lost many picks already due to other trades they have made, they will have to be real smart about their bench in the future and great development for who they draft, no wasted picks.

Browns Reaction: Browns fans knew the writing was on the wall since Garrett asked for a trade last season. Then they restructured a deal this offseason to make the pay easier and to make it easier to financially move. Garrett will be in the Browns Hall of Fame either way, 23 sacks in a season, 125.5 sacks throughout his career thus far, it really is just impressive. Now I am disappointed he wanted to leave, but I get it, he wasn’t going to get a Bowl here, but I am glad they at least got Jared Verse in this deal, who is an Ohio native, and actually wasn’t ranked too far from Garrett in quarterback pressures. Verse ranked top 5 in QB pressures and had 12 sacks combined in his first two seasons. Better yet, he still has room to grow! He is only 25 years old! On top of that, they got another 1st round pick for next year, which means the Browns will have 2 1sts again this year. They also got a 2nd and a 3rd in future drafts. I was hoping for another 1st round pick, but I don’t think any other team could offer a high value edge rusher with a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick. Or if they could, they weren’t offering it. The NFC West has become the best division right now, but there are still a lot of questions in the AFC North. The Browns, who have drafted well the past two seasons, if they continue to do so, could be a challenge. I do question if Todd Monken is the right coach though. I doubt it honestly, but a young talented roster could be enticing to a new coach if Monken doesn’t succeed.
